Early stage researchers

The University aims at a significant increase in the share of doctoral students until 2011. For this reason, from 2008 to 2009 a total of 5 research training groups have been prepared by the German Research Funding Organisation (DFG) and the Free State of Thuringia respectively.  Thanks to this initiative, about 110 early stage researchers can take up their structured PhD programmes in 2010.

Within the scope of the regional programme for the promotion of graduate students, 32 scholarships were granted to doctoral students in Thuringia in 2009, of which 12 were awarded to international students.

The Centres for Innovation Competence (ZIK) play a distinctive role for the formation of new university teaching staff. Two research group leaders from the ZIK “MacroNano”  have already been appointed.  A Tenure-Track has been granted to a third research group leader in order to attract him to do research at Ilmenau University of Technology in the long term.
