The I3TC

The Ilmenau Interactive Immersive Technologies Center (I3TC) is a TU Ilmenau infrastructure unit for the holistic research of technologies and applications of immersive media as well as their use and evaluation. In particular, such approaches and systems are considered that are oriented as far as possible to reality. This includes virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) as well as spatial audio and immersive video formats (high dynamic range - HDR, 8K or higher resolution, etc.). A focus is on distributed applications, especially telepresence solutions.

The overall infrastructure consists of different laboratory facilities of the TU Ilmenau as well as the AR/VR/MR laboratories currently being built as part of the new building of the data center. The center thus allows to implement the entire end-to-end chain of generation, processing, playback, reception, evaluation and interaction with corresponding content and systems.

The I3TC provides an environment for high-level research and teaching. This enables experimental investigations to be carried out and science-related, practical training for students and doctoral candidates in the fields of media informatics, media technology, media psychology and other engineering-related sciences.

AR, VR and MR are also increasingly important key technologies in the course of Industry 4.0. The center offers extensive opportunities for cooperation with research and industrial partners of the TU Ilmenau in this area.

The center is currently supported by 15 groups of the TU Ilmenau from the faculties of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EI), Computer Science and Automation (IA), Mechanical Engineering (MB) as well as Economics and Media (WM), the University Computing Center (UniRZ) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT).

The univerity is part of the Chemnitz-Ilmenau-Magdeburg Research and Innovation Network (CHIM).
