How do you get to Ilmenau?

Ilmenau is easy to reach by train from Erfurt, the capital of the Free State of Thuringia. Trains leave Erfurt every hour and reach Ilmenau after about an hour's journey through the picturesque hilly landscape of the Thuringian Basin. If you are coming from Saalfeld or Schweinfurt, you can change trains in Arnstadt. Erfurt is also home to the nearest airport, Erfurt-Weimar.

There are various ways to reach Ilmenau by car. The federal highways B4 (Coburg-Ilmenau-Erfurt), B87 (Ilmenau-Weimar) and B88 (Rudolstadt-Ilmenau-Eisenach) intersect in Ilmenau. The nearest highway is the A71, which runs from the north from the Erfurt interchange (A4) to Ilmenau-Ost and Ilmenau-West. From the south, the A73 from Nuremberg joins the A71 coming from Schweinfurt at the Suhl interchange. From Ilmenau-Ost the route to TU Ilmenau is signposted.
