Tenure Track Programme at TU Ilmenau

The TU Ilmenau considers the qualification of young researchers to be one of the focal points of a sustainable university. Therefore, the university committees have developed and approved a personnel development concept. In particular, this concept includes the establishment of tenure-track professorships.

The aim of the TU Ilmenau is to take on responsibility for young, qualified researchers as well as for the commitment of scientific excellence to the university. Besides offering attractive career options, the University aims to improve the development and transparency of the career path as well as early independence, thus increasing the attractiveness for scientists.

For this purpose, the University has expanded its appointment concept to include the option of a tenure track for junior professorships. The University Senate passed the necessary regulations for this in the framework of a statute. The Tenure Track concept is based on the rule that a temporary W1 junior professorship according to §89 ThürHG is transferred to a permanent W2 or W3 professorship after positive tenure evaluation.

The tenure track procedure is characterised by three main steps:

  • Advertisement and appointment procedure for the selection of the candidate and the appointment as a W1 junior professor,
  • Intermediate evaluation to determine whether the junior professor has been successful as a university lecturer in research and teaching and
  • Tenure evaluation, in which a decision is made regarding the transfer to a permanent and senior (W2 or W3) professorship.

The Technische Universität Ilmenau has received funds for the establishment of ten tenure-track professorships within the second call of the federal and state programmes for the promotion of young scientists.
