Stochastics Group

Welcome to the pages of the Stochastics Group!

Stochastics is the branch of mathematics which is concerned with chance. On the one hand, probability theory allows to mathematically model and thus precisely analyse random phenomena. On the other hand, mathematical statistics develops methods for data analysis, thereby quantifying the uncertainty doe to randomness in the data. Consequently, we are formally called Group for Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics.

Our research is both theoretical and applied. It is concernced with topics such as:

  • statistics of geometric objects
  • applying concentration of measure inequalities to statistics, in particular to compressive sensing
  • analysis of stochastic Petri nets

Moreover, we providestatistical consulting for university members.

In teaching we cover a broad range of topics from basics for mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers up to specialised courses.
