Brief description

From the microchip of a computer to the large machine in industry - countless applications cannot work without electricity. If you open the housing of a computer, for example, you will find countless electrical function groups through which current flows and signals are transmitted. Electrical engineering and information technology forms the basis for the development of numerous applications in communication, Industry 4.0 or biomedical technology.

In the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology program, you will learn how electricity is generated, transmitted and used. In the information technology part of the program, you will study how information is processed and transmitted in communication technology such as TVs or smartphones. The well-founded basic engineering studies prepare you comprehensively for the requirements of industry and open up numerous options for specialization in future fields such as autonomous and connected driving, artificial intelligence or the Internet of Things.

The program combines the demands of university teaching with current practical relevance. For each basic subject, you will conduct experiments in state-of-the-art laboratories, construct power circuits, convert electrical energy, and learn how signals are acquired, evaluated, and shaped in order to solidify your theoretical knowledge in application.

As a graduate in electrical engineering and information technology, you will, for example, ensure the security of supply in energy companies, design energy-saving microelectronic components for sustainable communication gadgets and assistance systems, or develop electric drives for e-cars. With a degree in this subject, many doors and fields of work as an engineer are open to you in numerous industries.

I study electrical engineering and information technology at TU Ilmenau because, to me, very excellent teaching is characterised especially by close supervision. The campus family is not just a slogan here, but lived reality.

Why Ilmenau?

In the bachelor's degree program in electrical engineering and information technology, you will receive comprehensive and practice-oriented training in the fundamentals of the two disciplines. The decades-long tradition and numerous industrial contacts of the Faculty of Electrical Engineeringand Information Technology guarantee you a high level of practical relevance. You will be involved in research and establish contacts with companies - a real advantage for your career start.

The interdisciplinary program provides you with both theoretical and methodological knowledge and forms the basis for the master's program of the same name. As early as the bachelor's degree, you can specialize in electrical engineering, information and communication technology, and micro- and nanotechnologies. In the master's program, 11 specializations are possible, including quantum engineering, energy informatics or microelectronic circuits.
