Brief description

Mathematics originated from the study of figures and the calculation with numbers. It not only forms the basis of physics, computer science, and engineering and data sciences. It also plays a prominent role in economics and finance and is becoming increasingly important in the life sciences.

With us you will learn the basic mathematical knowledge necessary for this. But mathematical modeling, programming and a non-mathematical application subject such as physics, biomedical engineering, computer science, economics or electrical engineering are also part of your studies. Above all, your problem-solving thinking is trained.

Right from the start, you will also work on tasks in small groups. In this way, you train to work together in a team at an early stage. From the 3rd semester onwards, application-oriented subjects will prepare you for a future career. Or, depending on the application subject, you can continue your studies with a master's degree in mathematics, business mathematics, computer science, economics or technology.

With your knowledge and your logical and analytical thinking, all doors are open to you after graduation: Whether optimization of steel production, flight path planning, data analysis for space travel, medical technology, management consulting or automation of production and trade - mathematics graduates of our university are employed in a wide variety of exciting industries and professions. Of course, they also work for banks and insurance companies, in research and development, or even as mathematics professors.

Why Ilmenau?

Because studying in Ilmenau is fun! Because our study conditions are optimal: The distances on campus are short. The tutorial groups in mathematics are small. And the connection to your professors is direct. This means that you will receive intensive support and guidance right from the start.

In addition to modern rooms and laboratories, we also have a lounge and computer room available to you 24 hours a day.

In the Ilmenau business and technology region, you are also close to practice. You can apply your knowledge directly in internships or student assistant positions in the surrounding companies and internationally active research institutes.

But you can also develop yourself outside of your studies in Ilmenau: with cultural or sporting activities in the student clubs and the university sports center or in one of the numerous student clubs.
