Description

Technical cybernetics is an interdisciplinary science. It is located between the engineering sciences and applied mathematics and deals with the description, analysis and control of dynamic processes. Cybernetic methods enable, for example, the automatic navigation of ships, allow complex processes to be described in cell organisms or help to optimise logistical processes such as timetables or energy networks.

The course of study imparts basic knowledge in the fields of automation, modelling, analysis, system theory, control and optimisation of technical processes. A basic education in mathematics, which is derived from the bachelor's programme in mathematics, and a broad selection of fundamentals from the engineering and natural science disciplines lay the foundation for this.

Content of study

Application modules

  • Biomedical engineering
  • Energy grids
  • Robotics
  • Microelectronics - Circuit technology
  • Process measurement technology

During the course of study, the basic mathematical training and the broadly diversified insight into all engineering fields prepare students perfectly for the future.

Practice during studies

There is no mandatory basic internship necessary. The specialist internship in the 7th semester lasts 10 weeks and can be completed in companies at home and abroad.

Fields of work

  • Automation, control and process technology
  • Process and production engineering, chemical industry
  • Automotive and traffic engineering
  • Astronautics and space technology
  • Environmental systems engineering, biosystems engineering, pharmaceutical industry
  • Traffic planning and logistics, consulting, banks

Maria and Janek study Technical Cybernetics and Systems Theory at the TU Ilmenau

Through Ilmenau with Janine and Marcel

Janine and Marcel take you on an exciting tour of the campus of the Ilmenau University of Technology and through Ilmenau itself. They describe how they live and study in Ilmenau, give numerous leisure tips and insights into the place of study of the Ilmenau University of Technology and take you to hidden places in the city.
