Mechanical engineering is a typical subject in engineering due to its combination of basic research and development of manufacturing processes (also production processes). It implements physical laws for the development of technical products and systems and covers the entire product cycle from research and development, design, calculation, construction, production, maintenance and operation to disposal. The spectrum of products and systems ranges from individual machine elements and machines to production lines and entire factories of the greatest complexity.
The focus of the mechanical engineering studies at the TU Ilmenau is on components and systems where information technology functions are essential. At the same time, the entire breadth of the mechanical engineering spectrum is covered in teaching. The specific orientation is particularly evident in the subjects of precision engineering and technologies, mechatronics, optics and lighting technology, measuring, sensor and drive technology, automotive engineering, micro and precision engineering, microsystems technology, nanotechnology, construction technology, factory operation, industrial science, production engineering and materials technology. In their combination they represent a unique selling point of the mechanical engineering education at the TU Ilmenau.
A successful course of study leads to the professional qualification "Bachelor of Science". It qualifies for the subsequent Master's degree course.
Janine and Marcel take you on an exciting tour through the campus of the TU Ilmenau and through Ilmenau itself. They describe how they live and study in Ilmenau, give numerous leisure time tips and insights into the place of study of the Ilmenau University of Technology and take you to hidden places in the city.
