Brief description

Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary engineering science related to electrical engineering/electronics, computer science and mechanical engineering. The term mechatronics has become established worldwide and has become the trademark of an interdisciplinary approach to the development, production and marketing of complex system products.

The students of this course of studies are therefore taught interdisciplinary skills and a method-oriented way of working. They are given the necessary skills for the development of mechatronic systems in the automotive industry, production engineering, medical device technology and other areas. Other important fields of application of mechatronics today are biomechatronics and micromechatronics/microsystems technology, which are key areas of education in Ilmenau alongside mechatronic system design. They form the bridge to the life sciences and to micro- and nanotechnology, which depend on interdisciplinarity and systems thinking.

Our self-test will help you to find out what demands are placed on you at the beginning of your studies and how well your skills and aptitudes match the course of study you are interested in.

Practice during studies

The basic internship is a course of study with a total duration of 8 weeks. If possible, it should be completed before the studies. The specialist internship in the 6th semester lasts 12 weeks and can be completed in companies in Germany and abroad.

Fields of work

  • Biomechatronics
  • Microsystems engineering and nanotechnology
  • Automotive supply industry
  • IT and electronics industry
  • Medical Technology
  • Measurement and control technology
  • Precision engineering equipment and mechanical engineering
