INFO 17 - Open Access publication fund

Objectives

Open Access logo

Open Access journals have turned into a more frequently used alternative for publishing research papers and contributions in comparison to the traditional specialist journal financed by license fees. A major advantage is the immediate and free availability of the paper without financial, legal or other access barriers.

The TU Ilmenau very much supports the publication of scientific papers with the help of Open-Access, and, correspondingly, the Senate adopted the declaration "Erklärung der Technischen Universität Ilmenau über den freien Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Forschungsergebnissen“ (declaration of TU Ilmenau on free access to scientific research results) in 2014.

However, publishing academics have to face the problem that journals working according to the Open Access model frequently charge publication fees for each paper and the author has to pay the "article processing charge“.

On the initiative of the University Library, TU Ilmenau has set up a publication fund for supporting university scientists financially and administratively.
Charges collected for publishing in Open Access journals can be paid with the help of this fund.

What can be supported?

Publications have to meet certain requirements for being supported by the Open Access publication fund:

  • A member of TU Ilmenau is either "submitting author" or "corresponding author" of the publication.
  • The journal publishing the paper provides access to all papers immediately online after their release for free and without any technical or legal barriers. Charges for Open Access release of individual articles in generally licensed electronic journals ("hybrid" Open Access model e. g. "Springer Open Choice") are in principle not eligible.
  • The article has been accepted by an Open Access journal which applies a strict quality assurance system which is usually a recognized review procedure.
  • The publication charge does not exceed 2,000 euro (incl. tax).
  • None of the persons involved in the publication has got Open Access financial publication means based on other sources for the publication in question at his/her disposal (e.g. project funding).

Please check the "Directory of Open Access Journals" for further information on suitable journals.

Funding procedure

As soon as the acceptance notification of an Open Access journal has been received, the application for the assumption of the due charges can be submitted using our online form:

https://www.tu-ilmenau.de/en/ilmedia/open-access/oa-application-form/

Alternatively, an informal application can also be sent by email to openaccess.ub@tu-ilmenau.de containing –as far as possible– the following details: Title of the journal, title of the article, position of the applicant with reference to the publication (submitting or corresponding author), publication date of the article, amount of the publication charge and, if appropriate, information on third-party funding of the associated research.

The responsible person for Open Access at TU Ilmenau informs promptly if the publication charges can be met by the fund.

You should contact the responsible person for Open Access in all matters, even on legal questions, when you plan to publish in an Open Access journal. While preparing the submission of documents, it can be worthwhile to contact the responsible person for information if certain Open Access journals meet the eligibility criteria.
