What motivates Online Hate Speech?

Group Media Psychology represented at Workshop on Aggression

Online hate speech is a highly relevant social problem. Nevertheless, there are only a few studies on the motives of the perpetrators. Even less research has been conducted on the motives of the bystanders in relation to whether they intervene in the hate speech situation. Completely uninvestigated is whether there may be motives on the victims’ side that can predict becoming a victim.

In a survey of a national sample of Internet users in Germany (N = 1791), motives of perpetrators, bystanders and victims were assessed. Results of this study will be presented at the workshop.
