Welcome to the pages of the Group
Stochastics is the branch of mathematics that deals with randomness. On the one hand, probability theory mathematically models random phenomena in order to subsequently subject them to precise analysis; on the other hand, mathematical statistics develops methods for the evaluation of data that quantify the uncertainty due to random influences during data collection. Accordingly, our subject area is called probability theory and mathematical statistics
Research
In our research we deal with theoretical as well as applied topics. Here are some keywords:
- Statistics of geometric objects
- Applications of measure concentration inequalities in statistics, especially for compressive sensing
- Analysis of stochastic Petri nets
In addition, we offer statistical consulting services for university staff. In teaching we cover a wide range, from basic education for mathematicians but also for computer scientists and engineers to special courses.
Statistical advice
Since February 2018, the Department of Probability and Mathematical Statistics offers a statistical consulting service. This service is available to all students and employees who are involved in a research project at TU Ilmenau. We recommend that you make use of the consultation at an early stage of the project, ideally before data have been collected.
