The study of mathematics

... in Ilmenau is made up of a 6-semester Bachelor's degree and a 4-semester Master' s degree that builds on it; in fact, most of our students complete both degrees at TU Ilmenau.

The Bachelor's program is structured to ensure a broad mathematical breadth. The goal of the bachelor's program in mathematics is to provide students with a very solid basic mathematical knowledge as well as knowledge in mathematical modeling, computer science and a non-mathematical application subject.

In addition, if the application subject is chosen appropriately, master's degree programs in computer science, a business or technical subject are open to students after the bachelor's degree.

Lea studies mathematics

Lea studies mathematics

Our student Lea talks about her mathematics studies at the TU Ilmenau and gives an interesting insight into the study conditions and answers numerous questions:

  • What is mathematics about?
  • How was your start in the study?
  • What tips do you have for first-year students?
  • And after graduation?
  • Why are you studying in Ilmenau?
  • What do you like most about Ilmenau?

Caro studies mathematics and business mathematics

Our Master's student Carolin talks about her mathematics studies at TU Ilmenau and gives an interesting insight into the study conditions and the diverse joint activities of the students, also besides the courses.

"My studies at TU Ilmenau: communicative, exciting and challenging."

Mathematics is in almost everything - that is something that makes studying mathematics particularly exciting for Caro. And the familiar relationship between professors and students creates a study atmosphere in which you can feel comfortable.

Math graduate: "I always knew that many doors would be open to me"

Studying mathematics at TU Ilmenau provides students not only with a very solid basic knowledge of mathematics, but also with knowledge of mathematical modeling, computer science and a non-mathematical subject, and trains problem-solving-oriented thinking. But where exactly can you go after graduation? To answer these questions, mathematics professor Gabriele Eichfelder invites mathematicians once a semester to report on their everyday professional life. One of them is Dr. Julia Fligge-Niebling. The TU Ilmenau graduate now works at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Jena in the field of data analysis and intelligence. UNIonline talked to the two about their love of mathematics and their different career paths. read more

We will advise you individually, offer you insights into research, let you "get a taste of the lecture hall", and give you the opportunity to talk to students and teachers.

Mentoring programme

In order to support the students of mathematics in their studies, the Institute of Mathematics offers a mentoring program. In case of occurring problems or constructive suggestions to improve the education of our students, they can contact the mentor of the Institute of Mathematics Prof. Dr. Thomas Hotz.

Consultation hours are possible by appointment. Students with problems and questions of any kind can simply contact their mentor by e-mail, by phone(+49 3677 69-3627) or in person (room C 315)!

Our courses are aimed at students of mathematics as well as students of computer science, technical physics and engineering. We attach great importance to high-quality, internationally oriented teaching, including English-language courses and study programmes.

Very good job prospects for mathematicians

After their studies, mathematicians have promising career prospects. This is due to their universal analytical and solution-oriented skills. A doctorate can advance their career read more

  • Industry development: Virtually full employment for mathematicians
Unemployment? This word hardly appears in the professional reality of mathematicians. According to figures from the German Federal Employment Agency (BA), around 100,000 of them were employed in Germany in 2017. That's a third more than ten years earlier. And in 2018, the agency recorded an average of just 700 unemployed mathematicians, a drop of seven percent compared to 2017. The bottom line is an unemployment rate of 2.4 percent. That's very low: a rate of three percent or more is officially considered full employment.

  • Job prospects after studying mathematics
Mathematicians therefore have good job prospects. But the job market offers them not only numerous, but also very different opportunities. They find employment in many areas. In addition to academic research and teaching, they can often be found in industry and business.

  • Many occupational fields for mathematicians
Mathematicians have almost free choice when it comes to choosing a career. Depending on the desired field, they can expect certain tasks and challenges. Here is a brief overview of four selected occupational fields and some of their characteristics.
