Improvement of the design quality of 3D-input devices using motion analyses and biomechanical comparisons. - In: Ergonomics and health aspects of work with computers, (2009), S. 276-285

Due to the lack of investigations and standards describing the design of real 3D input devices a real 3D input device was develop. To compare several devices a test task was created and performed with combination of a motion capturing system. During the experiment 19 attendees with different levels of experience performed the test with this setup. Several intra-individual motion patterns and using strategies belonging to different input devices could be observed.

Ergonomic design of user guides in multimedia environments with remote controls and onscreen displays. - Online-Ressource (PDF-Datei: 12 S., 340,1 KB)Publ. entstand im Rahmen der Veranst.: CybErg 2005, the fourth International Cyberspace Conference on Ergonomics, Johannesburg

During a project period of three years a new type of remote control and onscreen display was developed after a process of compares and analysis of present remote controls and multimedia devices. This project was initiated by a German producer of consumer electronics. The usability and user acceptance was tested and added by questionnaires. The characteristic of this system is a remote control with only one control element and an according concertedly developed onscreen display. This new onscreen display is marked that the motion of the thumb on the surface of the sensor pad produces a conformable motion inside the display. All operational functions are integrated in 4 menus at both sides, top and bottom of the screen. The user testing had shown that haptic elements are well suitable to fulfil the requirements of supporting the user by imprinted user routines and avoidance of visual control of the usage.

Down-scaling of a tourist assistance system to fulfil the needs of economical poor regions and providers of tourist offers. - Online-Ressource (PDF-Datei: 5 S., 471,2 KB)Publ. entstand im Rahmen der Veranst.: 8th International Conference on Work with Computing Systems, WWCS 2007, Stockholm, Sweden, May 21st - 24th 2007

Derived from a complex tourist assistance system for users with special needs (e.g. disabled users with physical impairments) a down-scaled system was successful tested. It consists of a handheld device like the whole system but disclaims to a permanent online server access. The reducing of components was determined by a user-centred design process with an intense requirement analysis.

TAS - touristisches Assistenzsystem für Urlaub, Freizeit- und Bildungsaktivitäten - ein InnoRegio-Projekt der TU Ilmenau. - Online-Ressource (PDF-Datei: 10 S., 543,9 KB)Druckausg.: Von Barrierefreiheit zum Design für Alle - Erfahrungen aus Forschung und Praxis / Rüdiger Leidner ... (Hrsg.). - Münster : Arbeitsgemeinschaft Angewandte Geographie. - 2007, S. 151-161

An evaluation study for a 3D input device based on ergonomic design criteria. - In: Ergonomics and health aspects of work with computers, (2007), S. 257-266

To compare traditionally established 3D-input-devices with a new ergonomically motivated equipment, an evaluation software is needed. With this software the control of different 3D-input-devices has to be applicable. The main attention of the evaluation is to determine the advantages of the new developed HAPTOR-device. The HAPTOR is an user-centred table based 3D-input-device. Intuitively used paths of the hand should be the basics of that device. To evaluate the users comfort additionally to the log parameters of the software, questionnaires and observation are necessary.

Specific I/O-devices for several handicapped and elderly. - Online-Ressource (PDF-Datei: 6 S., 259,9 KB)CD-ROM-Ausg.: Meeting diversity in ergonomics : proceedings IEA 2006 congress / ed. by R. N. Pikaar ... - Amsterdam [u.a.] : Elsevier. - 2006, insges. 6 S.

To fulfil the requirements of several user groups with the need of assistance in tourist activities and regions an assistance system was developed. The user frontend is realised by a handheld device combined with additional features matched to the user specifics. The system assures a optimal presentation of the needed information by a easy to learn and easy to use new gesture-based GUI. This and the additional specific I/O-devices and components provide the IT-Biocompatibility. These add-ons are adaptors for wireless transfer to hearing aids, vibro-tactile belts or accumulators and sensors for measuring of vital parameters.

The design of a tourist assistance system for several handicapped and elderly. - Online-Ressource (PDF-Datei: 5 S., 527,9 KB)CD-ROM-Ausg.: Meeting diversity in ergonomics : proceedings IEA 2006 congress / ed. by R. N. Pikaar ... - Amsterdam [u.a.] : Elsevier. - 2006, insges. 5 S.

By use of knowledge from biomedical engineering, ergonomics, information and communication technologies as well as from robotics and mechatronics an assistance system for several handicapped and elderly is in development. The aim of the project called TAS" (Tourist Assistance System) was the development and exemplary assembly of an assistance system for people with impairments as an access support to previously bad or not reachable tourism offers. It was implemented into a chosen model region in Thuringia / Germany. One of the main principles in this project was to use, combine and adapt market available components of the abovementioned technical areas. In this paper the design process of the assistance system and its main components and functions are described.
