Qualification phases

The phases

Our doctoral program consists of three well defined phases. This may be preceded by a preparatory phase in order to support you in complementing your experience and skills to provide you an optimal start into the doctoral program. Each phase is completed by successfully passing the respective gate. The figure gives an overview of the phases, the gates as well as the responsible persons involved.

Optional preparatory phase Q0

The goal of Q0 is to complement your scientific, methodological or language skills along with soft skills to optimally prepare you for our program. Completing Q0, you are able to conduct serious academic research in the field of the School and within a qualified team. You are expected to achieve this within 6 to 12 months. The goals are achieved by individual study programs with a strong focus on academic working skills and soft skills. The School provides qualification stipends to support students in this phase.

Detailed analysis phase Q1

The goal of Q1 is to gain a thorough understanding of the assigned research topic, open problems as well as ideas on their solution. We expect this phase to be completed within 12 months. The study program comprises courses and seminars to guide you in this and to further complement your knowledge and skills. The results of Q1 are documented in a detailed doctoral proposal defended and agreed upon by the advisory team and the management board

Detailed research phase Q2 and finalization phases Q3

Your doctoral proposal is the basis for your research in Q2 and Q3 where you will focus on individual research within the teams of the School. Additional focus of Q3 is on the development of leadership capabilities, international visibility and the establishment of an international career. The goals of Q2 and Q3 are supported by specialist seminars, attendance of conferences and a stay at an internationally renowned institution. We assume that each of these phases is completed within 12 months.
