Abstract:
Following Blooms taxonomy for measuring learning objectives, we can divide cognition into six different levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.Actual Learning Management Systems (LMS) include mainly tools for authoring multiple choice or cloze questions and the like. Those questions base on yes/no decisions and cover only the lower levels of the above-mentioned taxonomy.
In the paper, the authors describe web-based scenarios to assess also higher levels of knowledge. Therefore, a combination of interactive learning objects and hands-on experiments were created in the last years in a close cooperation between TU Tallinn and TU Ilmenau.
The subject to be taught is in the field of design of digital systems and control algorithms as well as in the field of design for testability of digital systems. Design tasks themselves require advanced knowledge up to the synthesis level.Assessing such a level of knowledge in a web-based learning scenario is very difficult and not supported in usual LMS. In the paper, we describe a solution of a remote lab that is connected to a LMS and is able to proof the students design. Stepwise the students get feedback about errors in their design. To assess the quality of a design-for-testability-solution of a student a web-based hands-on laboratory opens the possibility to compare different solutions of students regarding to the fault coverage as well as to the minimal number of necessary test vectors.
