Eigenvalues of vibrating membranes and networks

Abstract: What do the tones of a drum, the time evolution of heat in a piece of metal and the ground state energy of a quantum-mechanical system have in common? They can be described completely in terms of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator (or a more general differential operator). In this talk we review aspects of the spectral theory of the Laplace operator on domains in the Euclidean space and on graphs. Amongst others we discuss the hot spots conjecture of J.~Rauch that suggests that the hottest point in an insulated metal plate should converge to the surface for large time, and its counterpart for networks.
