Welcome to Ilmenau

Famous Kickelhahn-Tower

The Goethe and university town of Ilmenau – population approx. 30.000 – is situated in the foothills of the Thuringian Forest. Surrounded by the mountains of the Thuringian Forest in Germany's "green heart", it makes an excellent base for hiking. It is also the start of the 20-km Goethe trail following in the footsteps of this great writer and poet.
Ilmenau offers plenty of variety for everyone – cultural enthusiasts, nature-lovers, sporty types and people who enjoy hiking and (mountain) biking.

"I was always happy to spend time here, and still am.
Methinks the reason lies in the harmony that is struck here ..."
(Goethe wrote to Schiller on August 29, 1795 from Ilmenau)

Ilmenau, place of science

Ilmenau University of Technology looks back on a long tradition of higher education in the fields of electrical and mechanical engineering. Its present degree courses are those which will meet future needs: engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics and business as well as social studies which can all be followed on a compact campus with five faculties.

The Ilmenau University of Technology is an internationally acknowledged institution with strong local roots. The university with its 6.900 students is mainly located on the main campus providing a cozy and lively environment to its students and staff. Personality and intercultural openness along with internationality play a major role here.

Welcome to the university

The Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau) is the foremost place for technical education on the university level in the Free State of Thuringia. Engineering, natural sciences, economics and media studies are the main topics of education here.

The university offers 18 undergraduate and 23 master’s degree-granting programmes to more than 6,900 students. Education in Ilmenau is known for its interdisciplinarity, practice-oriented research seminars and early integration of students into current research projects.

The TU Ilmenau is committed to both basic and applied research as well as transfer of knowledge to industry. As a result, the university functions in an interdisciplinary manner that crosses the boundaries of its various faculties. The relevant know-how of individual faculties is thus combined to form six competitive and faculty-spanning research clusters which have been declared as profile focuses under the family brands “Micro and Nano Systems” and “Intelligent Systems Engineering and IT”:

  • Nanoengineering
  • Precision Technology and Precision Measurement Technology
  • Technical and Biomedical Assistance Systems
  • Drive Technology, Energy Engineering and Environmental System Technology
  • Digital Media Technology
  • Mobile Communications

The university is top-ranked both nationally and internationally.

For many years, scientific cooperations with research institutions in Central and Eastern Europe are the basis for joint collegiate education projects. The attractiveness of studies in Ilmenau is raised by attractive binational double degrees in collaboration with partner organizations all over the world. As a result of those multifaceted projects with our partner institutions in eastern Europe, South America, the Middle East and China, around 10 percent international students receive their education in Ilmenau.
