Applied and Virtual Acustics

Educational Objectives:

The students are enabled to name and to understand the fundamentals of acoustic components and processes. This includes recording, coding, and reproduction. The students learn to analyze and to assess audio technologies and systems from the viewpoint of auditory perception. The lecture series gives the student the ability to consider both auditory perception and acoustical physical effects for the technical realization of processes, components, and systems.

Selection of Topics:

  • Fundamentals of Acoustics

  • Fundamentals of vibration theory, eigenoscillation and eigenfrequencies

  • Fundamentals and applications in building acoustics and room acoustics

  • Fundamentals of physiology of hearing and psychoacoustics

  • Reproduction systems, audio file formats and auralization

  • Microphone arrays

  • Physical modeling of room acoustics

  • Mathematical modeling of room acoustics

  • Noise

Audio Systems Technology

The lecture series enables the students to identify, interpret, analyze, and validate current digital audio systems and technologies. The students are able to describe and categorize modern digital audio software and hardware components. One result is to raise awareness of pitfalls of the design process of current audio systems and to be able to understand and validate the design process.

Overview of digital audio techniques:

  • Analogue to digital conversion

  • Dithering

  • Sample Rate Conversion

  • DFT / FFT basics

  • Digital Filters

  • Audio Signal Restoration,

  • Digital Amplifier and Public Address

  • Digital Sound Synthesis and Manipulation

  • Music Information Retrieval

Audio Coding

Educational Objectives:

After attending the lecture and solving the homework assignments, the students should be able to have enough basic understanding of high quality audio coding to implement encoders and decoders or participate in ongoing research in the area.

Selection of Topics:

In depth introduction into coding of high quality audio signals. The lecture series comprises of three major parts:

- First, an introduction into the main algorithms used in high quality audio coding (filterbank, psychoacoustic model, quantization and coding)

- Second, an introduction into some of the most used formats for high quality audio coding with an emphasis on the MPEG Audio standards (MPEG-1 including MP3, MPEG-2 including AAC, MPEG-4 including HeAAC)

- Third, current research topics and specialized audio coding formats like lossless coding, very low delay coding, parametric coding etc.
