learning outcome

Students should know how to process and compress digital images and videos. Based on the visual perception of the person, they should know criteria for the evaluation of images and videos and can apply them in quality tests.
Students are familar with the lecture topics with the help of exercises (individually and in groups). They should be able to acquire current knowledge independently. As a result of the lecture, they are familiar with the state of the art and the common methods of quality assessment of visual content.

Die Studierenden wissen, wie digitale Bilder und Videos verarbeitet und komprimiert werden. Sie kennen, ausgehend von der visuellen Wahrnehmung des Menschen, Kriterien für die Bewertung von Bildern und Videos und können sie bei Qualitätstests anwenden. Mit Hilfe von Seminararbeiten (einzeln und in Gruppen) können sich die Studierende aktiv mit den Vorlesungsthemen auseinandersetzten und sind befähigt, sich aktuelles Wissen selbstständig anzueignen. Im Ergebnis der Vorlesung sind sie mit dem Stand der Technik und den gängigen Methoden der Qualitätsbewertung von visuellem Content vertraut.

  • Content of the Lectures:Visual perception, 2D Image processing and analysis, Colorimetry, Video processing, Video coding, Coding settings for different purposes, Video quality: Models and Subjective tests, Quality of Experience (QoE), Cameras: Optics, Technical evaluation of cameras, Visual scene analysis, Computer Vision and algorithms

  • Tutorial Session:Image Procession/Filtering, Image Coding, Entropy Coding, Information Theory, and Subjective Video Quality.
  • Group Exercises: Coding settings for different purposes, Implementation of different intra prediction modes, Implementation of entropy encoding and decoding algorithms, Video encoding, and Implementation of different objective metrics.
