Application procedure

To be accepted for the Master of Media Technology, various requirements regarding professional and language knowledge have to be fulfilled. During the application mind the deadlines and the procedure's details. For international students a visa might be required as well.



Both the applicant's professional qualifications and his language skills have to fulfill determined requirements.

Your professinal qualifications will be reviewed individually. If you don't meet the requirements you will have to accomplish an Academic Preparation Course (APC). 

Professional qualifications

To start the consecutive Master of Media Technology you need to have a Bachelor's degree in one of the following subjects or a similar one: Media Technology, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology. Further possible degrees could be Industrial Engineering, Mathematics or Physics.

There is no admission restriction! A qualifying examination takes place and will check the following details: Does the applicant have broad knowledge in engineering basics and methods? Did the applicant gain knowledge in media technology specific domains like audio technology, video technology or media production?

Herefore, a rating system is applied. If the admission minimum is not reached, the student will be invited for an oral examination (via Skype) and/or in individual cases for the Academic Preparation Course.

Language requirements

To be accepted for the Master of Media Technology you have to proof the following English language skills by handing in one of the following certificates:

  • TOEFL: 79 (IBT), 213 (CBT), 550 (ITP)
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • APIEL: 3
  • CEFR: C1
  • Cambridge exam: CAE

There is no German knowledge requirement to apply at the university.

Academic Preparation Course

Academic Preparation Course

Under certain circumstances concerning your Bachelor program it is required to complete the so called Academic Preparation Course (APC) before being fully enrolled in the Master program.

Within the APC you will have to gather 30 Credit Points (ETCS). Officially the duration of the APC is between one and four semesters but it is possible to finish the media technology-specific APC within one or maximum two semesters. After you accomplished the necessary 30 CP you will be officially enrolled in the Master program and become a Master student of Media Technology.

The aim of offering the APC in this form is to give you a solid foundation regarding relevant Media Technology knowledge of the Bachelor program as well as methodological and scientific competences that facilitate the entrance in the following Master program. Also language courses can be accomplished to reach the Master program's required level.

Components of the APC

The APC consists of self-study courses from the media technology Bachelor program focusing on fundamentals of media technology, a scientific working course and a practical project performed in groups aiming at developing a media technology product and training self-organization and teamwork-based problem solving.

The elements of the APC result in 30 Credit Points as follows:

  • 15 CP Self-study courses
  • 5 CP Scientific working
  • 10 CP Practical project

Procedure and Important Dates

Procedure and Important Dates

Your application has to be handed in online in the applicant portal. The official application deadlines are

  • July 15 for winter term
  • January 15 for summer term.

If you need a visa to study in Germany, it is recommended to finish the application approximately three months earlier. This means, that you should apply about half a year before the starting date. More information about the deadlines can be found in the applicant portal.

After your application has been handed in, your professional qualifications and language skills will be examinated.
