Advanced Psycho Acoustics

Advanced Psychoacoustics is a lecture for Master-Students in Media Technology. The course is hold in English. The lecture starts with basics in psychoacoustics, developing psychoacoustic test methods, performing experiments, analysis of data, and presentation of the results. The basic idea is to investigate a new hot research question at every new term. 

The lecture is divided into two parts. The first part is a lecture presenting the advanced basics. The second part contains the development of the research topic, planing the experiment, and conduct the experiment. The second part is much more practical oriented. Therefore it is mandatory that the students are actively involved in the experiments.


Some topics from the last semesters are:

  • loudness model and perceived loudness, sharpness, roughness
  • perceived direction of elevated virtual sound sources using wave field synthesis
  • perceived externalization and distance using binaural synthesis and adaptation of distance cues
  • binaural synthesis of 22.2 and 5.1 loudspeaker setups; listening test to rate perceived audio quality of different audio codecs in the context of the next new MPEG-H standard
  • influence of spatial scene complexity and room acoustic disparity on perception of quality features using a binaural Synthesis system
  • distance perception and externalization and the DRR

new topics can be:

  • spatial listening: state of the art, open questions
  • HD audio and listening
  • statistics for listening tests
  • perceived sound quality using binaural synthesis
  • congruence between binaural synthesized scene and listening room
  • audio-visual divergence
  • and others







It is strongly recommended that you have a self-study on the Basics in audio, audio signal processing, acoustics, quality, spatial listening, and binaural synthesis. You can find some relevant links below. Other relevant literature (scientific papers) are given as hand out during the lecture. Use the university library for relevenat books etc.

Other modalities are published during the lectures. The dates for conducting the experiment are variable depending on the experimental design and procedure. Please note that it is necessary to block some dates for the practical part or project.

Depending on the research experiment it would be necessary to build up two or more groups. There will be specific topics which are handled by the groups. More information are given in the first lecture and during lecture 7 and 8 .

There is the possibility to take a oral exam at the end of the Semester during the exam period. Please contact Stephan Werner or Prof. Brandenburg to fix a date. The exam contains the more theoretical content of the first part of the lecture and the practical part, of course!
