Software & Systems Engineering (RCSE)

Course offered by the Systems and Software Engineering group, Winter semester 2019/20

Credits

  • Master "Research in Computer & Systems Engineering": mandatory course for the first semester (Module "Basic Studies")
  • 2+1 SWS (usually two lecture hours per week throughout the semester plus seminar), 5 LP (credit points)

News

  • The student talks have been scheduled, please check the course moodle. All students who entered their topic choice until the deadline have been accepted. Students arriving later will have to do the class in the next year.
  • The two planned afternoon lectures on Tuesdays have been moved to lecture hall LdV-Hs2.
  • Organizational questions should be emailed to Prof. Zimmermann.
  • Participants have to register officially with their Thoska cards before their talks, but definitely until the end of November to be able to get the credits and take part in talks and exam.

Organization

  • Lectures
    • Tuesday 11:00-12:30 in room LdV-Hs2
    • Additional lectures on Tuesday 22.10. and 19.11. at 17:00 in LdV-Hs2
  • Student talks: Tuesday 17:00 in room K2002A and Wednesday 11:00 in room HU117, planned from November 26 until January 28. Talks are scheduled in two groups, and each participant only has to attend the talks of his/her group.
  • Grading:
    • 80% written exam
    • 20% student talk (based on: slides quality, presentation skills, content, timing, answers to questions)
    • both parts have to be passed
  • Please register for the class with your Thoska card!
  • All parts of the course will be held in English

Seminar and Student Talks

At scheduled days, there is a seminar-style meeting with short talks given by the students. The audience are all participants of the same group (A or B)! Planned days are shown in a PDF table in our class moodle. Tuesday seminars are held 17:00-18:30 in room K2002A, while Wednesday seminars take place 11:00-12:30 in room HU117.

Each talk must not exceed 12 minutes excluding discussion time! Please email your presentation (either PDF or PPT format) to the respective supervisor (Prof. Zimmermann or Dr. Maschotta) on the day before the seminar, to give all presentations using one laptop computer. If you send your presentation early enough before that deadline, we might be able to give comments to improve the presentation until the deadline.

Grading of student talks takes into account 1) content quality, 2) slide formatting & design quality, 3) presentation skills, 4) time management and 5) answering of questions.

Exam

The 90-minute written exam will take place in the lecture-free time following the semester. Only students who are officially registered for the course (Thoska / examination office) may take part. Participants need to bring and present a photo ID (Thoska card).

An exam document with questions and enough place to fill in the answers will be provided during the exam. Students may bring one A4 (one-sided) "cheat" sheet of hand-written notes prepared by themselves. No other material is allowed. Use of cell phones, additional cheat sheets, electronic devices with storage and any form of copying from or communication with others during the exam is strictly forbidden and leads to a failed grade. Pens, calculators, and clear plastic bottles are allowed.

To get credits for the class, student talk and written exam must both be passed (at least 50% of points). If you fail and repeat the exam later on, you can keep your result of the student talk.
