Five student clubs of the then "Technische Hochschule" united in 1990 under this name - the bc, BD, BH, bi and the bc student café. The first activities of the clubs date back as far as 40 years. Outside the regular opening hours, the club offers diverse options for leisure time activities for its members such as common excursions, barbecuing or board games evenings.
hsf is the university radio Ilmenau or simply the student radio on the campus of the TU Ilmenau. Here, especially students from the Ilmenau media majors, as well as technology and radio interested, unite. The university radio has a very long tradition and has, among other things, the largest CD music archive on Germany's student radio stations. One of several highlights is the ISWIradio, where there is live broadcasting 24 hours a day for one week.
The ilmenau student television, short iSTUFF, is the student television channel of TU Ilmenau and a department of the Forschungsgemeinschaft elektronisches Medien e.V. (FeM e.V.). ISTUFF allows students of all subjects to deal autonomously and practical with the processes of TV productions and to try themselves out and practise themselves in all positions.
The "Hochschulfilmclub" is a club from students for students and movie enthusiasts. Participants have fun watching movies and organizing film events, offering a program that goes beyond the common films in most commercial cinemas. From comedies, dramas and action films, to horror and thriller, everything is there. All movie enthusiasts are invited to watch and discuss films on a big screen in a cozy atmosphere for little money.
ISWI e.V. is a club that was founded by students. It takes a stand for peace, international understanding, disposition and tolerance. It is better known for being the organizer of the "International Student Week in Ilmenau" ("ISWI" as well). This largest international student meeting of it's kind takes place at the Technische Universität Ilmenau since 1993 every two years.
Once every year during the Bergfestwoche the campus is in an exceptional state. Besides many parties, the Bierathlon and sopabox derby there are several cultural events. The organisation of the Bergfestwoche starts now about nine month in advance and is done by ca 20 students.
The chamber choir of TU Ilmenau is a mixed choir which exists since 1985. Musical pieces from all kinds of eras are rehearsed weekly and performed at different events. The repertoire of the choir comprises four- to eight-part voice works, mainly madrigals, motets, spiritual chorus, folk and art, as well as close harmony / pop arrangements.
The academic orchestra of TU Ilmenau counducted by Valentin Egel consists of music enthusiastic staff and students of Technische Universität Ilmenau as well as Ilmenau musicians from all age groups. Besides the joy of making music, the focus is on the expansion of one's own musical abilities, which are trained in sectional rehearsal under professional guidance in order to perform more demanding works of serious music together.
The big band of TU Ilmenau - "Second Unit jazz" - was founded in 2003 from 12 students out of the chamber orchestra. The orchestration, arranged on big band-type standard, consists of saxophone, trumpet, trombone and a rhytmic group, could welcome an audience bigger than 400 people already in the second year during concerts. The traditional semester ending concerts have become an inherent part in the cultural calendar of the city of Ilmenau and the university.
KuKo e.V. is the umbrella organization of different teams and clubs as for example the Street Food Festival or the FilmLebenFestival. It sees itself as a contact for culture enthusiasts in the region and vicinity as well as as an organizer for the university and spanning events.
The Jazzclub Ilmenau e.V. aims to contribute an important share to the cultural life in Ilmenau. It organizes 10 to 15 concerts every year at various venues on campus and in the city. One focus are the International Jazztage Ilmenau as well-established festival for contemporary jazz. Since the nineties it has also been involved in the Thuringian jazz mile.
