With our modern society' s increased dependence on information technology and communication networks, the subject of network security is developing into a crucial base technology and most people working in the networking and information technology business will need to know the basics of fixed and wireless network security. This book gives a firm introduction into the field covering the fundamentals of data security technology and explaining in-depth how they are applied in communication networks.

  • Approaches network security from the wireless as well as the computer networking side.
  • Concentrates on the core networking issues (first 4 layers up to the transport layer).
  • Helps the reader to understand the risks of a lack of security in a network & how to prevent it.
  • Brings security in networks up to date by covering wireless and mobile security issues.
  • Includes security issues around hot topics such as wireless LANs (e.g. IEEE 802.11), AAA (authentication, authorization, and accounting), and GSM/UMTS/LTE.
  • Illustrates complicated security concepts with exercises and features an extensive glossary.

An essential reference tool for graduate students of computer science, electrical engineering and telecommunications who need to learn the basics of network security. Also, professionals working in data- & telecommunications will also benefit from the book as it gives a self-contained introduction to the basics of network security: network managers, engineers, IT managers.

The following topics are covered:

Basics

  • Basic Terminology of Information Security and Cryptology
  • Symmetric Encryption
  • Asymmetric Cryptographic Algorithms
  • Modification Check Values
  • Secure Random Number Generation
  • Cryptographic Protocols
  • Access Control
  • Secure Group Communication

Network Security

  • Integration of Security Services into Networking Architectures
  • Link Layer Security Protocols
  • Internet Security Architecture (IPsec)
  • Transport Layer Security Protocols

Wireless and Mobile Communications

    About the Authors

    About the Authors

Günter Schäfer studied computer science at Universitaet Karlsruhe, Germany, from 1989 to 1994. Between 1994 and 1999, he was researcher at the Institute of Telematics, Universitaet Karlsruhe. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree (1998) he worked at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications, Paris, France (1999 - 2000). Between 2000 and 2005, he was a researcher at Technische Universitaet Berlin in the Telecommunication Networks Group. Since 2005 he is full professor of computer science at the Technische Universität Ilmenau, leading the Telematics/Computer Networks research group. His research interests lie in the areas of network security, networking protocols, mobile communications, and innovative communication services/architectures, and he regularly gives courses on network security, networking subjects and basics of computer science (programming, algorithms etc.).

Michael Rossberg studied computer science at Technische Universitaet Ilmenau, Germany, from 2002 to 2007. Since 2007 he is a researcher at the Telematics/Computer Networks research group. In 2011 he obtained his Ph.D. in computer science with a thesis on peer-to-peer-based auto-configuration of large scale IPsec VPNs. His research interests lie in network security, resilience against denial-of-service attacks, and performance evaluation/optimization. Since December 2013 he serves as a lecturer – also in the Telematics and Computer Networks research group.
