In memoriam Prof. Dr.-Ing. Cordt Schmidt

The Technische Universtät Ilmenau mourns the death of Professor Cordt Schmidt, who passed away on November 7, 2021 at the age of 86.

TU Ilmenau

His practically effective scientific work in electrochemistry and electroplating and as a university lecturer, vice-rector and head of department earned him a high reputation.

Cordt Schmidt began his studies in 1956 at the University of Applied Sciences for Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Power Engineering, specializing in electrochemistry and electroplating. In 1961 he obtained the academic degree of Diplom-Ingenieur. He then took up a position in the Institute of Electrochemistry and Electroplating as a research assistant. In 1966 he obtained his doctorate on the subject of internal stresses in electroplated coatings and was awarded the academic degree of Dr.-Ing.

After one year of additional studies in 1969 at the St. Petersburg Technical Institute, Chair of Electrochemistry, Cordt Schmidt was appointed university lecturer for electrochemical technology at the Electrical Engineering Section of the Ilmenau Technical University in 1971. He then worked at VEB Galvanotechnik Leipzig as a development engineer until 1974 and was involved in the development and technical introduction of processes and equipment for the production of copper foils for the printed circuit board industry. For this achievement, the development team received the National Award of the GDR II. Class. After finishing his industrial activities, he worked as a university lecturer in the field of electrochemistry and electroplating.

In May 1985 he habilitated with a thesis on electrocrystallization in electrolytic copper foil deposition with high current densities. In the same year he was appointed full professor in the field of automation of electro-technological systems at the electrical engineering section of the Ilmenau Technical University. He then took up a position as prorector, which he held for five years. In 1997 Cordt Schmidt was entrusted with the provisional management of the Department of Electrochemistry and Electroplating of the Institute of Materials of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. He held this position until his retirement in 2000.

In silent mourning we say goodbye to Prof. Cordt Schmidt as an always committed and forward-looking personality. We will honour his memory.
