The problem of the haze caused by huge forest fires persists as an annual transboundary problem for Indonesia and the rest of Southeast Asia. In 2015, the problem was worse than ever before, affecting many countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and causing respiratory ailments for more than half a million Indonesians. This study explores the media framing of the haze problem in Indonesia from June to December 2015. Using Entman’s framing approach, it investigates how media outlets from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore covered the crisis. Articles from six online media outlets published in these three countries were analysed. Using cluster analysis, this research identified three frames as follows: (1) crisis frame, (2) immediate action frame, and (3) regular problem frame. The first cluster/frame consists of articles giving high salience to all problems and causes of the forest fires provoking the haze. In contrast, the second frame mostly ignores causes and problems and focuses almost exclusively on the need for immediate action. The third frame, which represents more than 60% of the articles, covers the haze problem as a regular issue without emphasizing prominently either the different aspects of the problem itself or its causes and solutions. Further results show that the media in Singapore and Malaysia used the crisis frame more often than the media in Indonesia.

Das Jahr 2010 war sowohl für Deutschland als auch für Australien ein Jahr mit einer weitreichenden Flutkatastrophe. Doch wurde von den Medien dieses Extremwetterereignis mit dem Thema Klimawandel in Zusammenhang gesetzt? 2009 gewann eine konservative Koalition die Wahlen in Deutschland; in ihrem Programm die klare Aussage, den Klimawandel bekämpfen zu wollen. In Australien gewann 2007 die Labor Partei mit der Kampagne "der Klimawandel ist die größte moralische Herausforderung unserer Zeit" die Wahlen. Aber wie greifen die Medien das Thema Klimawandel im Kontext der Berichterstattung zu den Wahlen auf? Diese Arbeit beantwortet diese beiden Fragestellungen mithilfe einer Vergleichsanalyse von zwei deutschen und zwei australischen Qualitätszeitungen (n = 1.012 Artikel). Dafür wurden sowohl Entman's (1993) Framingansatz als auch das "Erweiterte Sphärenmodell", das es ermöglicht, Unterschiede in der Berichterstattung zu identifizieren, als theoretische Grundlagen genutzt. So wurden mithilfe einer hierarchischen Clusteranalyse sieben Frames identifiziert. Zudem werden sechs Akteursgruppen unterschieden und mögliche Einflussfaktoren erarbeitet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Unterschiede in der Klimawandelberichterstattung der beiden Länder eher gering sind. Zwar konnten einige der definierten Unterschiede mithilfe des angewendeten Models erklärt werden. Jedoch stechen vor allem die Übereinstimmung in der Klimawandelberichterstattung heraus. Es scheint deshalb, als ob die Qualitätsmedien in beiden Ländern gemeinsame Standards für die Darstellung des Themas Klimawandel haben.

In der heutigen digitalisierten Medienwelt ist es sowohl für Kommunikatoren als auch für Rezipienten schwierig, die Verlässlichkeit von Informationen zu beurteilen sowie Gerüchte und Falschmeldungen zu identifizieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat die journalistische Faktenprüfung in den letzten Jahren an Relevanz gewonnen und zahlreiche Redaktionen, die sich auf diese Aufgabe spezialisierten haben, wurden eingerichtet. Bislang ist aber wenig darüber bekannt, wie erfolgreich deren Arbeit ist und unter welchen Bedingungen es gelingt, durch Falschmeldungen hervorgerufene Fehlvorstellungen der Rezipienten zu korrigieren. Daten zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen wurden mit Hilfe dieses Fragebogens erhoben.

Large publishing companies have been dominating scientific publishing for long, which leads to high subscription fees and inhibited access to scientific knowledge. At digital era, the opportunity of an unrestricted access appears feasible, because the cost of publishing should be low. It is no longer the readers and libraries to pay subscription fees, but scientific organizations and authors themselves who pay for the cost of having their article published. As the data shows, there is a tremendous variance of article processing charges (APC) across journals, which obviously cannot be explained by the costs. One of the explanatory variables could be reputation, but it only contributes less than 5% to the variance in APC. This study is meant to shed light on the various determinants of APC. Based on data from the OpenAPC Initiative, the Directory of Open Access Journals, the Journal Impact Factor and the Essential Science Indicators of Web of Science, we employ ANOVA and multivariate regressions. The results show that market power plays an important role to explain APCs, inter alia, through market concentration, market position of individual publishers (publisher size), and the choice of hybrid publishing model.
