The energy transition requires more than the expansion of renewable energy sources. It also demands innovative solutions to ensure a secure, reliable, and stable energy supply. While essential ancillary services are still largely provided by conventional power plants, the associated CO2 emissions are often overlooked in energy system planning. This work presents an innovative approach for designing CO2-minimized energy systems by jointly considering electricity, gas, and heating networks. At its core is a novel simulation and optimization framework that integrates climate protection, grid stability, and security of supply. Particular attention is given to balancing services and the role of flexible industrial processes as valuable sources of system flexibility. Through a series of practical case studies, this contribution demonstrates how integrated multi-energy systems can be planned and operated more sustainably. It provides valuable insights and a forward-looking planning tool for grid operators, energy providers, researchers, and decision-makers shaping the future of energy infrastructure.
