| previous knowledge and experience | Knowledge of the
techniques of scientific work, basic understanding of empirical research, basic
knowledge of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics |
| learning outcome | Based on recommended materials, students independently got to know and understand the research process and gained an overview of selected analysis methods and research designs of empirical communication research (e.g. qualitative: qualitative content analysis of interview protocols, 2. quantitative: secondary analysis of survey data, 3. computational: computer-aided text analysis of social media data). After completing the exercise, students will have in-depth knowledge of the selected qualitative, quantitative or computer-aided analysis methods and will be able to apply these methods in data analysis for communication science projects. Students know specific software solutions (e.g. R, MAXQDA) that they can use for their data analysis. |
| content | As an interdisciplinary subject, communication science benefits in particular from a variety of analysis methods, which include quantitative methods as well as qualitative methods or so-called computational methods of analysis. In this module we focus on selected qualitative, quantitative and computational analysis methods in the field of communication science. Recommended materials for self-study provide an overview of the basics of selected qualitative, quantitative and computational analysis methods. The statistical/methodological basics are covered as well as examples from research practice. In exercises, students work on a data analysis research project with a qualitative, quantitative or computational focus and thus deepen the knowledge they have acquired via their self-study. |
