Students are able to describe the functioning and regulation of the European and US electricity markets and can critically assess them from an energy economics perspective.
Students are able to explain the relationship between electricity generation, the wholesale electricity market, the grid and electricity sales and will be able to critically discuss economic problems at all market levels.
Students are able to evaluate strategies for the decarbonization and climate neutrality of the electricity sector. By participating in the group discussion, they are able to establish argumentative relationships and enjoy discussions on energy economics.

The Energy Economics course deals with the functioning and regulation of electricity markets. The focus is on the German, and to some extent also the European and US electricity markets. The course provides insights into the areas of electricity generation, the wholesale electricity market, the grid and electricity sales. The current status of German and European regulation will be discussed. In addition, the planned decarbonization of the electricity sector with regard to a sustainable and climate-friendly/neutral electricity industry will be discussed. In addition to the theoretical basics (e.g. on the issue of capacity mechanisms), an insight into practical solutions is provided time and again.

Relevant literature will be provided at the beginning of the semester.

Preparation and presentation of a term paper

Participation in input events and presentation on a topic assigned during the event. In the case of illness, a repeat examination will be offered.
