| learning outcome | Through the lecture the students understand the structure and the essential components of VR and AR applications. They know the techniques required for this and can remind them if necessary. Through the seminar they have practical experience in the conception of a VR/AR applications and can implement them as part of the practical course within an application context. Through the group work in the seminar as well as in the practial lab course, the students can correctly assess and appreciate the achievements of their fellow students. They take criticism, heed remarks and accept suggestions. |
| content | Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are two technologies which become more and more important today, in particular with the availability of consumer VR displays and the introduction of AR SDKs on all major mobile platforms. This course covers the required knowledge to understand and create VR and AR applications considering their large variety regarding hardware and software. The course investigates into special VR and AR output devices such as HMD and CAVE, 3D interaction techniques including navigation in VR, selection and manipulation as well as usability aspects. It also deals in detail with real-time aspects. Finally, AR, its different visualization concepts, geometric and photometric registration, as well as the tracking methods underlying AR, such as marker tracking and SLAM. Furthermore, the principle of Mediated Reality is discussed and Diminished Reality is explained in detail. In the seminar and the practical lab course the students will develop their own small VR or AR application in small groups. |
