learning outcome

The students have obtained a solid background in basic concepts of surface and interface physics. Lecture and problem class enable the students to independently work in the field of surface and interface science and, ideally, to identify new open questions. After the lecture the participants are prepared for research in surface and interface physics.  The students are able to identify challenges in modern research fields such as the quantum physics of surfaces and interfaces. They have gained a thorough overview on previous and current research in surface and interface physics.

content

Surfaces and interfaces represent archetypical quasi-two-dimensional objects and offer the unique opportunity to study the rich physics of two-dimensional systems, both experimentally and theoretically. The lecture emphasizes the solid-state-physics and, thus, quantum-physical aspect of surfaces and interfaces. Dynamics of electrons will be discussed in terms of Shockley surface state dispersion and conductance quantization for transport across one-dimensional constrictions in two-dimensional electron gases. The experimental realization of quasi-two-dimensional electron gases will be explored in detail. Phonons, plasmons and polaritons are examples for vibrations whose dispersion in reduced dimensions deviates from the  behaviour in three dimensions. Modern topics such as magnetism and superconductivity of thin films, clusters and atomic wires will be treated as well as topological materials. The lectures are complemented by a problem class.
