Technical competence: The students know the physical principles which determine the propagation and the interactions of microwaves in media (especially tissue) and at dielectric interfaces. They have basic knowledge about measurement methods in the microwave frequency range (e.g. network analysis, dielectric spectroscopy) as well as about the necessary technical components and measurement systems. They are familiar with the principles and technical implementation of ultra-wideband sensor technology, in particular UWB radar technology.

Methodological competence: Students are able to name medical fields of application for UWB sensor technology and analyze their potential. They know the technical requirements and signal processing methods to apply such systems in medicine. They are able to deal with recorded data and know which relevant information is to be extracted and how. This applies in particular for medical UWB imaging and non-contact vital sign data acquisition using microwaves.

Social competence: With the knowledge acquired in the lecture, the students are able to present and explain methods and procedures of microwave sensing to medical professionals and to point out and demonstrate areas of application in clinical practice. They will be able to actively participate in professional discourses and share their experiences.

The following skills are acquired specifically during the practical exercise: Students are able to perform related measurement tasks (e.g. S-parameter measurement, dielectric spectroscopy, various UWB radar applications) in a group and solve related problems together. They can discuss different approaches in order to jointly find and implement the best solution for a given problem. They can accept criticism and take comments and advice to heart.
