| learning outcome | The students study the functionalities and structure of UMTS systems. The main focuses of the lecture are the network and protocol aspects of the system. Main topics of the lecture are the network architechture, network elements, protocols, and services in UMTS systems. The most important system functionalities which are considered are the mobility management, the radio resource allocation, the link and session management, QoS aspects, as well as authentification, authorisation, and accounting. To understand the development of UMTS also GSM and its data extension GPRS are treated as they are the fundamentals of UMTS. The course also introduces new developments as HSPA, LTE and SAE. Radio aspects are not a main topic of the lecture and are only mentioned, where they influence the functionality and structure of the UMTS Network. | |
