learning outcomeStudents understand the concept of »intellectual property«. and can explain the major differences between various types of intellectual property rights (brands, designs, patents, copyrights, trade secrets).They know and distinguish national and international legal instruments in the field of intellectual property and industrial property rights. Students are able to distinguish the terms invention, patent application and patent and can explain the process of granting patents. 

They can estimate the cost of acquiring a patent and are aware of options to eliminate interfering patents of third parties. Students understand patents as competitive instruments, know principles of patent portfolio management and are familiar with the particularities of employee inventions in Germany.
