Lernergebnisse und erworbene Kompetenzen

Students are able to understand and comply with elementary and essential rules and standards of everyday university life and in particular the university culture of the University of Ilmenau. They are able to integrate themselves independently into academic processes and find ways to solve problems. They practice appreciative and respectful interaction with each other, faculty, staff and other students of the university. They are able to orient themselves in intercultural contexts, recognize their own and others' influences and derive and practice appropriate rules of conduct for themselves.

The course will focus on the following topics:
Diversity - Cultural Richness: this is about dealing with individual freedom in our society. Diversity is about participation and being able to be who you want to be, locals as well as international students. People from societies in which individuality is little valued are flooded with impressions in Germany (with reference to equality of the sexes, free decisions, freedom of opinion, developing one's own thoughts, role models and family constellations and much more).
Here we answer the question, how do I deal with diversity when studying? How do I deal with the issue of individualism? We and the others - how does real participation succeed?
Cultural orientation: This is about clarifying the concept of culture and we answer the questions: What does German culture look like? What are the rules? What is my own culture? How do I bring the two together? The participants develop personal perspectives andstrategies for their studies in Germany and practice dealing with uncertainties.  This also includes dealing with the different structures and (teaching and learning) cultures at universities, as well as the understanding of roles in the academic / professional field. In order to look at and test how to deal with misunderstandings or culture-related conflicts, we deal with intercultural communication. The students develop strategies to avoid as well as to deal with conflicts that could not be avoided.

Dealing with stereotypes & prejudices:How do prejudices arise? What are my own prejudices and how do I deal with them?
