Technische Universität Ilmenau is further expanding its expertise in the future-oriented field of digital health: Effective July 7, 2026, Dr.-Ing. André Kaeding has been appointed honorary professor in the field of “Hospital Information Systems” at the Department of Computer Science and Automation. With his many years of experience at the intersection of medical informatics, health care management, and digitalization, he will strengthen the practice-oriented education at TU Ilmenau, particularly in the Biomedical Engineering program.
Prof. André Kaeding is a managing director, consultant, and co-founder of several companies in the healthcare industry in Thuringia and beyond. As a graduate of TU Ilmenau with a focus on Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science as well as Neuroinformatics, he has been combining entrepreneurial practice with scientific research for more than three decades. Since 1995, he has worked closely with the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Informatics at TU Ilmenau. His research focuses on knowledge-based decision-making processes and digital information systems in healthcare in particular.
The 62-year-old has also been actively involved in teaching for many years. He has been co-teaching the course “Hospital Information Systems, Telemedicine, and eHealth,” and since 2019, he has been responsible for the entire lecture series for students of Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, as well as Industrial Engineering. The focus is on the challenges involved in the digitization of care processes and the digital transformation of the healthcare sector.
In doing so, Prof. Kaeding combines scientific fundamentals with concrete real-world application examples, thereby teaching students about the technical, organizational, economic, and societal requirements of modern medical information systems. Beyond his teaching, he has also been mentoring students for many years during internships and thesis projects.
In addition to his research and teaching, Prof. Kaeding is actively involved in various professional and business associations at the state and federal levels, focusing on digital health and managed care, thus contributing his expertise to the further development of digital health solutions and a sustainable healthcare system.
