An important stage of life has been completed: last weekend, the TU Ilmenau held a ceremony to bid farewell to 195 graduates and doctoral candidates as they embark on a new phase of their lives. In the period from July 1 to September 30, 2025, 86 Bachelor's, 103 Master's and six diploma students successfully completed their studies.
The Presidential Board of the University and the deans of the faculties personally presented the young academics with their degree certificates in a festive setting. The ten best overall graduates were also honored with a special award.
Prof. Stefan Sinzinger, Vice President for Research and Young Scientists, gave the keynote speech. Under the key concepts of "responsibility" and "confidence", he appealed to the graduates to look positively to the future and to use what they have learned to help shape society responsibly in line with the scientific approach. This also means being aware that the other person may have a different perception and therefore a different opinion - and may even be right:
Imagine a society in which the contributions of all players to the discussion on the complex social challenges are again characterized by such a realization!
Niklas Gromeleit, Master's graduate in Business Informatics, spoke on behalf of all those who received their diplomas. Based on the wisdom of the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, "A journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step", he reviewed his time as a student. His conclusion: the diversity of his studies and fellow students from all over the world had shaped him and shown him that doubts and resistance can be overcome with courage and confidence.
IHK award for practical research
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the IHK award 2025. The award from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Südthüringen for outstanding scientific achievements went to Alexander Voelz from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was honored for his master's thesis on "Development of methods for the suppression of moiré in camera-based display measurement technology", which was supervised by Prof. Gunther Notni and Dr. Maik Rosenberger.
Today, displays play a central role in almost all technical devices. Camera systems are used to precisely evaluate their quality. However, the so-called moiré effect - an undesirable pattern that occurs when recording certain display structures and distorts the measurement results - can interfere with this. Alexander Voelz's award-winning work is dedicated to the further development of methods to reliably suppress this effect. Based on a newly presented mathematical model, he analyzes and improves existing methods and also presents his own new approach.
Jan Scheftlein, Deputy Managing Director of IHK Südthüringen, praised the work, which was carried out in cooperation with Ilmenauer TechnoTeam GmbH, as an example of successful collaboration between science and regional industry.
Recognition for voluntary work
At the end of the celebrations, the Student Council focused on voluntary work. A total of 22 awards were presented to students who are involved in the university's numerous clubs and societies alongside their studies, thus enriching campus life.
