learning outcome

Students can repeat the basic properties of surfaces and thin films.

Students can describe the basic differences between surfaces/thin films and bulk materials.

Students can explain the basic methods for thin film and surface investigations.

Students can interpret various surface and thin film states.

Students can analyze materials properties in surfaces and thin films.

Students can propose different methods for the investigation of surfaces and thin films.

Students can interpret and judge results of surface and thin film measurements.

Students can judge about states and properties of surfaces and thin films, they can predict them and they can apply them. They know methods for the preparation and testing of surfaces and thin films and can choose the right ones for various application cases. They can explain and apply such methods. They can apply their knowledge and competences to new surface and thin film problems. They can present and scientifically discuss a given topic.

Students can present and given topic and discuss it. After intensive discussions and group work during the exercises, the students can correctly assess and appreciate the achievements of their fellow students. They take criticism, heed remarks and accept suggestions.

Factual Competences

Surfaces:

Basics, thermodynamics, structures, surface diffusion, reconstruction, relaxation, technologies, vacuum, analysis methods

Thin Films:

basics, preparation methods, growth dynamics and growth modes, grow structures, mechanical stresses, multilayers, epitaxy, properties, applications

Testing methods:

Thin films and surface measurement methods

Methodological Competences

Students can analyze thin films and surfaces and draw conclusions. They are able to convert measurements of properties of materials.

Self-reflecting competences

Students know how to deal with surface and thin film materials representations and can judge about deficiencies and limitations. They know how to extend the problem and find a solution.

Social Competences

After the seminar, the students can present and reflect selected topical examples, and they have learned how to search information and how to present this in a talk and to discuss the problems. After intensive discussions and group work during the exercises, the students can correctly assess and appreciate the achievements of their fellow students. They take criticism, heed remarks and accept suggestions.
