Participants should have a strong interest in social media and at least basic knowledge of social research methodology (study design, data collection, data analysis), especially content analysis.

learning outcome
  • Students understand the relevance of the video sharing platform YouTube in today’s media world.
  • Students are familiar with the current state of media and communication research on YouTube (i.e. on YouTube producers, YouTube content, YouTube audiences, and YouTube effects).
  • Based on the current state of YouTube research students are able to conduct empirical studies on YouTube including all main steps of the research process.
  • Students are able to present research findings both in oral form and in written form following APA style.

From the perspective of communication science, YouTube is a very relevant research topic, as it is used for many different types of communication (e.g. health communication, political communication, social campaigns, advertising, education, entertainment, news, citizen journalism etc.).

The aim of the research module is twofold: We look into the current state of YouTube research, and we conduct our own empirical YouTube studies. Quantitative media content analysis of YouTube videos and YouTube comments will be one relevant method.

Course will be held online exclusively. Being present in Ilmenau is not necessary for completing the course.

Technical prerequisites:

-        webcam (720p/HD),

-        microphone,

-        access to internet (at least 4 MBit/s for HD quality),

computer that is powerful enough to run the web conference software (WebEx)

  • First and second semester: Active participation in all course sessions (no unauthorized absence), short presentations of current state of work in seminar sessions, regular upload of research results to moodle (30% of final grade)
  • First semester: main oral presentation and written research report (30% of final grade)
  • Second semester: final oral presentation and written research report (40% of final grade)

In order to pass the course as a whole, you have to complete all academic achievements (research tasks, oral presentations, term papers).
