Deutschland Tour: Cycling event around the city campus

The TU Ilmenau was cooperation partner and venue of the Deutschland Tour 2021 at the stage finish Ilmenau. The program around the finish of the 2nd stage from Sangerhausen to Ilmenau on August 27th in the Friesenstraße at the city campus of the university attracted thousands of spectators.

City campus was the center of the action

The "Georg-Schmidt-Technikum" with the Curie-, Faraday- and Röntgenbau was the center of the action and the university had been involved in the extensive organizational work of the tour organizers and the city around the major sporting event. Exhibitors from the fields of cycling, health and tourism, sponsors and cooperation partners presented themselves at the expo around the city campus. At the information stand of the TU Ilmenau the little ones could playfully deal with technical contexts and the older ones could inform themselves about the range of studies. In the Röntgen- and Curiebau the university had provided rooms and the technical infrastructure as well as the press centre, where journalists from different media could work professionally and were catered for by the cafeteria of the Studierendenwerk.

Colourful hands-on programme for young and old

While the tour was broadcast live on ARD television from 3 p.m. onwards, an extensive hands-on programme for the whole family started as early as 12 noon. Program highlights in the outdoor area of the Georg Schmidt Center such as the "kinder joy of moving tour", the running bike race across the finish line accompanied by professional cyclist Jens Voigt and the "Bike Parade" with a circuit attracted a large crowd of visitors despite the rain. The Expo area was open until 5 p.m. and accompanied the race until the feverishly awaited and frenetically celebrated finish of the cyclists with subsequent award ceremony by the Thuringian Minister of Economics and Science Wolfgang Tiefensee and the Mayor of Ilmenau Dr. Daniel Schultheiß.

Last Minute Info Day as part of the supporting program

The TU opened its doors on the Hans Stamm Campus at 10 a.m. for the Last Minute Info Day. Those interested in studying at short notice had the opportunity to get to know the campus on the Ehrenberg on site, to find out about the courses on offer and to get answers to all their questions about studying and living in Ilmenau. This information offer was also part of the three-day cultural program of the city of Ilmenau around the Germany Tour.

Great event with the support of the TU Ilmenau

Finally, at noon on Saturday, the race for the 3rd stage was opened by the District Administrator of the Ilm District Petra Enders and Mayor Dr. Daniel Schultheiß and the total of 132 cycling professionals, including winners and teams of the Tour de France, left Ilmenau for the next stage destination Erlangen. The entire region and its citizens will remember this great sporting event for a long time - also because of the perfect organisation of the Tour of Germany, to which not least the employees of the Marketing Department, the Department for Buildings and Technology and the University Computer Centre of the TU Ilmenau contributed.
