Higher, faster, further: University sports center experiences month of competitions

Finally competition again - this motto characterized the first month of summer at the University Sports Center (USZ). Competitions were held on the campus of the TU Ilmenau and athletes and teams of the TU Ilmenau were sent to German University Championships.

The combination of second place and German University Championships succeeded Joanna Kus at the DHM Mountainbike Enduro from June 10 to 12 in the Saxon "Trailcenter Rabenberg".

"We had a great start to the summer, because in addition to the fun at the competitions, there were also good successes to celebrate," says Ulrike Reinhardt, head of the of the USZ. Directly on the first weekend in June, the Benefit Biathlon of the Lions Club Arnstadt Ilmenau was held on the running track of the USZ. Every lap and every hit in the competition was converted into euros via local donors. In total, a four-digit sum was raised. This will now benefit the young people in the Ahr Valley, who have had to do without many of their sports facilities since the flood disaster.

The TU beach volleyball players Marie-Luise Lüdtke and Melissa Moje made their start at university level at the German University Championships (DHM) on June 5 in Munich. The two brought a 7th place finish back to Ilmenau - out of a strong field of 32 teams, some of which were made up of players from the Volleyball Bundesliga.

The Dies Academicus on June 7 was complemented on campus with the Basketball 3x3 Hochschulcup, which the USZ organized together with the Basketball Löwen Erfurt in cooperation with the Barmer Krankenkasse. Six teams of the university delivered exciting matches in the mode "everyone against everyone".

Two days later, the team sports continued. The team of the USZ had invited to the Thuringian university championship in volleyball. The universities and colleges from Jena, Weimar and Schmalkalden compared themselves with the volleyball players of the TU. It remained exciting until the last game. This was decided by the team of the Bauhaus University Weimar in the third set and relegated the players of the TU Ilmenau to the second place. Third place went to the team from FSU Jena, ahead of the team from Ernst Abbe University Jena and the athletes from Schmalkalden UAS. Despite the second place felt as defeat, congratulations and "high five" go to the Ilmenau team. If the event is repeated next year, the TU volleyballers would love to bring home the title. "I'd rather get a good beating from the top teams at the German University Championships than come second here in the local derby," one of the Ilmenau players put his feelings into words shortly after the tournament.

The combination of second place and German University Championships succeeded Joanna Kus at the DHM Mountain Bike Enduro from June 10 to 12 in the Saxon "Trailcenter Rabenberg". The Ilmenau mechanical engineering student won the first race directly on Friday with the prologue. On Saturday and Sunday, only a female student of the TU Dresden let her ride faster through the individual classifications (stages) of the race - although she had to run downhill almost completely with the bike on her hand due to a technical defect. Her male MTB fellow students did not leave too much of a gap to the competition either: with Guido Straube, Christoph Hemeling and Robert Reichert, places 4,5 and 9 went to the TU Ilmenau.

The summer semester continues in a sporty way - on July 1, the Ilmenau Science Night, the city-campus run takes place, which connects the city and the university. For the first 200 participants the well-known medals of the city in puzzle format are held ready, which tie in with other Ilmenau running events. The first Ilmenau Bulli meeting will also take place in the parking lot of the USZ. Have a look at the buses on July 1 and discover the exciting world of science!
