For his services to information technology: Prof. Reiner S. Thomä appointed VDE ITG Fellow

Prof. Reiner S. Thomä, Professor at the Electronic Measurement and Signal Processing Group (EMS) at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at TU Ilmenau has been named a VDE ITG Fellow for his outstanding scientific achievements and commitment in the field of measurement technology and signal processing for mobile radio and radar systems.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans D. Schotten (right), Chairman of the Board of the VDE ITG, congratulated Prof. Reiner S. Thomä.

The Information Technology Society (ITG) in the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE e.V.) requires a personal scientific or technical achievement that has produced or significantly promoted fundamental findings in the field of information technology. "With his research, Prof. Thomä paved the way for the development of broadband, directionally resolved channel sounders for the model-based estimation of wave propagation and the OTA (over-the-air) evaluation of radio systems," said the jury in its statement. "His work on the seamless integration of radio sensors and mobile communication (ICAS, integrated communication and sensing) is currently attracting particular attention. His work at TU Ilmenau has always been characterized by a high standard of scientific innovation and technical-industrial application."

Prof. Reiner Thomä headed the EMS Group at TU Ilmenau from 1992 to 2018. Even as a retired professor, the graduate engineer in information technology is still actively involved in research at the EMS Group, including as part of the DFG research group METERACOM, the projects open6GHub, 6G-ICAS4Mobility, KOMSENS-6G from the 6G program of the BMBF, as well as BiRa and KREATÖR of the Free State of Thuringia. In addition, he continues to supervise doctoral students in their research work. His particular research interests include the measurement and modeling of wave propagation in mobile communications (channel sounding), model-based multidimensional estimation of wave parameters, OTA (over the air) testing of MIMO radio systems in virtual electromagnetic environments as well as UWB, MIMO and passive radars and the integration of radio sensors and radar.

For his achievements in the high-resolution measurement of wave propagation in mobile communications, Prof. Thomä was appointed IEEE Fellow in 2006 (Life Fellow 2023) and awarded the Thuringian Research Prize for Applied Research 2006, the Vodafone Foundation Innovation Prize 2014 for Research and the EurAAP Propagation Award 2020.

The ITG VDE is the national association of all stakeholders in the field of information technology in business, administration, education, research and science. Founded in 1954 as Nachrichtentechnische Gesellschaft, it is the oldest specialist society in the VDE.
