Study award for dynamic network security calculation

Jan Kircheis, research assistant at the Group of Electrical Power Supply, receives the 2021 Study Award of the SEW Eurodrive Foundation for his master's thesis on "Dynamic Security Assessment in Distribution Systems as a novel Control Center Application".

VST Saalfeld GmbH. Michael Trommer

In his work, Jan Kircheis investigated the question of realizing a dynamic network security calculation in the electrical energy distribution network. In the course of the conversion of the energy supply to predominantly renewable energies, a large part of the generation plants shifts from the transmission grid to the distribution grid. These plants, usually connected to the grid with power electronic systems, change the dynamic system behavior. This category of network dynamics has not been considered so far in the planning and operation of electrical distribution networks and has now been taken up by Jan Kircheis.

The nomination for the study award was made by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. In the expert short statement of Prof. Westermann, head of the Group of Electrical Power Supply, acknowledged the extremely high commitment in the preparation of the master's thesis. "Mr. Kircheis prepared his master's thesis in a creative and structured manner. Mr. Kircheis' independence in the preparation of this master's thesis was above average." Jan Kircheis graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and began his master's degree in electrical power and control engineering at Ilmenau Technical University in 2017. In the course of this, he completed a year abroad in Norway at NTNU Trondheim (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) in 2019. After successfully completing his master's degree in May 2021, he will work as a research assistant at the Electrical Power Supply department and is aiming for a doctorate in the field of electrical power supply.

The SEW-EURODRIVE Foundation annually awards the Ernst Blickle Study Prize to master's and diploma students in the fields of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and economics. The honored master's and diploma students have distinguished themselves through particularly high performance, which is defined by good work in a reasonable amount of time, and are determined by the foundation's board of directors in cooperation with the institutes based on nominations. It is not possible to apply for the prize, which is endowed with 2,500 euros. The SEW-EURODRIVE Foundation promotes scientific work as well as the development, deepening and advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of technology and economics.
