According to the selection committee's citation, Professor Schumacher was honored "for his outstanding work advancing state-of-the-art simulations and better understanding of turbulent flows, including convection, passive scalars, cloud microphysics, and the universality of the transition to turbulence." Fellow status is considered one of the most prestigious honors in a scientific community worldwide. The Vice President for Research and Young Scientists, Professor Stefan Sinzinger:

The award of this most prestigious membership degree of such a prestigious technical association as the American Physical Society is proof and recognition of the outstanding achievements of Joerg Schumacher on an international level. On behalf of the entire university, I congratulate my colleague Schumacher most sincerely on this award, which contributes positively to the scientific reputation of the TU Ilmenau.

Currently, Prof. Schumacher is coordinating the Priority Program 1881 "Turbulent Superstructures", funded by the German Research Foundation DFG, in which processes are investigated that lead to order on large scales in the form of coherent patterns in completely turbulent flows. This is a phenomenon observable in many natural flows such as the atmosphere. In this consortium, renowned scientists from 15 universities and research institutes from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Great Britain work together on joint projects. The priority program brings together engineers, physicists, mathematicians and meteorologists.

In another large-scale project funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, "DeepTurb - Deep Learning in and from Turbulence", Professor Schumacher and colleagues from Technical Thermodynamics, Computer Science and Mathematics at TU Ilmenau are researching neural network architectures that are capable of predicting the temporal development of turbulence without using the underlying complex mathematical model equations. This interdisciplinary work profiles TU Ilmenau as an internationally respected location for data-driven modelling in flow research.

The American Physical Society (APS) is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of the knowledge of physics through outstanding research journals, scientific meetings, and education, outreach, advocacy, and international activities. APS represents more than 50,000 members, including physicists in academia, national laboratories, and industry in the United States and around the world. The APS Fellowship Program was established to recognize members who have made significant innovative contributions to the application of physics in science and engineering through outstanding research and publications. Fellow status is a special honor that signifies recognition by one's peers.
