Since November 1, 2021, Dr. Shashwat Bhattacharya has been at TU Ilmenau for a two-year research stay as a postdoctoral researcher with a fellowship from the renowned Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Dr. Bhattacharya did his PhD on the physics of turbulent flows at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. In Ilmenau, together with colleagues at the Institute of Thermodynamics and Fluid Dynamics, he plans to investigate the influence of strong magnetic fields on the structure formation processes in turbulent convection flows in order to gain a better understanding of heat transport properties, e.g. in the vicinity of sunspots or in fusion reactor safety systems. It is known that turbulence is suppressed there, but the detailed mechanisms of action are still unknown.
Dr. Bhattacharya will obtain the answers to these questions by means of numerical simulations.
