Excellent Reviewed: Lorentz Power Research Training Group

The Research Training Group 1567 "Lorentz Force" of TU Ilmenau has received an excellent evaluation in the final report of the reviewers of the German Research Foundation (DFG). The 10-year DFG-funded Research Training Group focused on two methods for the contactless analysis of electrically conductive substances.

This involved, on the one hand, Lorentz force anemometry for flow measurement in electrically conductive liquids and, on the other, Lorentz force eddy current testing for defect detection in conductive solids. Thus, two seemingly distant fields of research - flow measurement and eddy current testing - have been closely linked by exploiting one and the same physical principle.

The experimental, theoretical and numerical investigations in this respect were divided into three major project areas, liquid metals, electrolytes and solids. In all three areas, the applicability of analysis by means of Lorentz force was successfully confirmed and its manifold applications, but also its limitations, were explored and extended. In the period since 2010, 34 young scientists from eleven countries have completed their doctorates, and almost the same number of PhD students or postdocs have been associated with the research group. The successful research of the Kolleg is documented in more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and the 25 patents.

The final report of the review panel is now available, in which the Research Training Group was awarded top marks and highest recognition. These include the above-average proportion of female scientists with doctorates (around 30 percent), the diversity of scientific publications at an international level, and the international orientation of the Research Training Group through the doctoral students' internships abroad. The fact that one third of the doctoral students came from abroad was also positively highlighted. In the opinion of the reviewers, the researchers at TU Ilmenau have made an outstanding and exemplary contribution to the promotion of young researchers with the Research Training Group.
