The book "Wissenserwerb zum Thema Klimapolitik aus Mediennutzung und interpersoneller Kommunikation" (Knowledge acquisition on climate policy from media use and interpersonal communication) by Fenja De Silva-Schmidt has been published as the 7th volume in the new series "Nachhaltigkeits-, Energie- und Umweltkommunikation" (Sustainability, energy and environmental communication) by the Universitätsverlag der TU Ilmenau.

A basic knowledge of climate policy enables democratic participation and commitment to climate protection. However, existing studies on Germans' knowledge focus either on the consequences and causes of climate change or on other policy areas. Moreover, there is little research on the sources and process of knowledge acquisition.

In her study, TU Ilmenau researcher Fenja De Silva-Schmidt investigated the contribution of media use and interpersonal communication to knowledge acquisition about climate policy, and what other factors besides information sources influence and explain learning. The study was conducted in the context of the 2015 UN Climate Summit in Paris and combines a three-wave panel survey of the German population (N = 1121) with a qualitative diary survey (N = 42) and a qualitative content analysis of the diarists' used media content. A rather low level of knowledge is revealed; in the medium term, there is a learning effect with regard to particularly topical aspects of the subject. The acquisition of knowledge is limited by a ceiling effect, which results to a large extent from coverage that is limited in content.
