New degree program: Business administration with technical orientation

TU Ilmenau is introducing the Bachelor's study path "Business Administration with Technical Orientation" in the winter semester 2021/22. In contrast to traditional business administration, the new course of study includes not only the fundamentals of economics and law, but also an elective catalogue of engineering and natural science subjects.

In distinction to the study of industrial engineering, the new study programme "Business Administration with Technical Orientation" omits both the basic technical internship and the joint basic engineering studies (GIG) of the TU Ilmenau. These will be replaced by basic modules such as mathematics and statistics, which will be taken jointly with students from the Business Information Systems and Media Management courses. The curriculum also includes a large number of in-depth modules in business administration and law from the Faculty of Business Administration and Media. The eight-week internship can be completed in technical or commercial areas according to the student's own preferences, and the students can also choose the topic of their final thesis between topics in economics and engineering. In addition, the curriculum offers the opportunity to study abroad for one or more semesters. The completion of the "Bachelor of Science" also opens up the perspective of following up with a Master's degree. The consecutive Master's programme "Business Administration with Technical Orientation" is already in the starting blocks, so that graduates can seamlessly continue their studies at TU Ilmenau.

High demand for business studies with technical orientation

Prof. Anja Geigenmüller, Vice President for Studies and Teaching at TU Ilmenau and Professor of Marketing, helped design the course, which is based at the Faculty of Economics and Media: "The demand for business studies has been high for years. In order to benefit from the overall good job market opportunities, it is important that graduates have an attractive profile. This is where the new innovative degree programme comes in. Due to the technical orientation, which is only available at two other universities in Germany, the graduates will have additional knowledge and skills that are not taught in conventional business administration courses. As a university of technology, we can make an offer to high school graduates for whom a classic business administration degree is too one-sided and a degree in industrial engineering is not commercial enough. The new business studies course with a technical orientation therefore fits perfectly with our profile as a university of technology."

Career fields in all commercial areas

The Business Administration degree programme with a technical orientation offers graduates career prospects in all commercial functions. This also includes new fields of activity such as innovation management and digitalisation, interface functions such as supply chain management or technical sales, as well as classic commercial functions such as marketing, human resources, accounting or financing.

Admission to the degree programme "Business Administration with Technical Orientation", as well as to all other degree programmes at TU Ilmenau, is without numerus clausus. Interested students with a German university entrance qualification can apply until October 15, interested students with a university entrance qualification acquired abroad and corresponding proof of language skills (at least language certificate B1 for application, C1 for the start of studies) can apply for admission to the new course of studies until July 15.
